I got the following in an email. It sums up my feelings on the election pretty well:

I am depressed and it is a huge letdown that it is finally over and the Democrats have lost, lost, lost. Lost the presidency, lost seats in the Senate, lost seats in the House. I am very sad because I am someone who believes in a woman's right to choose, in equal protection under the law for everyone regardless of race, creed, gender, age, and sexual orientation, for someone who feels religion most certainly does not equal morality, for someone who believes the rich can get by with a little bit less so many, many poor can have a little bit more, for someone who seeks to compromise with the world rather than take it over, for someone who trusts in science and knowledge more than faith, for someone who would give up a hobby so that kids couldn't accidentally shoot themselves in the head, for someone who thinks global warming and mercury in the water might actually be important to our society, and for someone who cannot believe a president can be impeached for lying about a blow job but not for lying about going to war and leading to the deaths of over a thousand Americans and one hundred thousand Iraqis. The Democratic Party will surely take the results of this election to mean that they have to move away from my positions in order to appeal to the "great majority" of fifty-one percent and 270-something electoral votes. That saddens me more because then what?? Who is on my side on the above issues? The only hope, and it is unbearable to even hope for this that I won't, is that the Bush-Cheney-Rove-Rumsfeld, Rice, Ashcroft crew fuck up so royally in the next four years that the Democrats can benefit and claim they were correct all along and gain political victories in 2006 and 2008 without compromising their viewpoints which probably wouldn't be a politically sound long-term strategy anyway. It's going to be a long four years and if W. can improve the lot of this country and its people then he deserves some credit. I don't see him improving life for anyone but his friends and cronies. I will be happy to be wrong and unhappy to be right. Now for the only up-note to end on: hopefully, the Democrats who are left in the House and Senate will fight their asses off to keep this President in line and make sure he doesn't get more Scalia/Thomas-like justices on the High Court, that he doesn't further bankrupt our nation with tax cuts for the rich, that he doesn't continue to force freedom to be on the >march> > in the Middle East, that he doesn't privatize Social Security, and that >he> > doesn't continue to tilt the environmental playing field so far towards industry. I'm still a liberal Democrat and I am hopeful that liberalism will rise> > again and be the ideology that gets America through the tough times as >it> > has in the past.> >
